This house is a category B listed bungalow; a typical, classically proportioned, Portobello beach house dating from 1824. The project was to improve and extend the house, to provide an open plan kitchen and to connect the house to the garden while increasing the thermal performance where possible.

A clean, modern design approach was taken, minimising fuss while maximising light and sunshine. Timber clad and zinc roofed with a decorative “micro-cement” floor by George Neculai was carried through to the bathroom walls. A hand-crafted kitchen was built by Muir Studio.

A small tweak to the front villa saw the bathroom made narrower to incorporate a wider hall and allowing a glimpse through the main public spaces to the garden at the rear.
