In 2022 Konishi Gaffney were approached by a repeat client for the extension and complete renovation of their detached Victorian villa in Morningside, Edinburgh.
The project included the conversion of the existing Maid’s quarters to form an open plan, double height, Kitchen / Dining / Living Space with a home office mezzanine above. The space was extended to the east to give space for the generous kitchen with frameless glazing providing an uninterrupted connection to the well maintained garden and through the space from front to back.
The project prioritises the use of natural, sustainable materials with wood fibre insulation, lime plaster, structural timber and limestone flooring. The extensions whitewashed oak roof structure brings warmth and softness to the space befitting of the building’s stature.
The house was fully refurbished and reorganised to suit the family’s needs and clarify the plan to provide a boot room, utility space and ensuite bathroom. Great care was taken to provide a transformation that enhances and modernise the building’s Victorian features and preserve its charming character.
