The Queen’s Hall

2023 Competition Winner

The Queen’s Hall renovation project, led by Konishi Gaffney Architects and Karen Nugent Conservation Architect, aims to modernise and improve accessibility while respecting its historic character. Situated on Edinburgh’s Clerk Street, this iconic A-listed venue, renowned for its excellent acoustics and role in the city’s cultural scene, is set to undergo significant upgrades.

The design enhances the building's street presence by integrating the shopfronts on either side, creating a unified, welcoming façade. Accessibility is a key focus, with plans to widen pavements and regrade surfaces, providing seamless access for all visitors. The interior will feature improved circulation and flexible lobby spaces, supporting diverse events and community use.

Incorporating a sustainable approach, the project prioritises reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Upgrades include improved insulation, modern heating systems, and thoughtful material choices. The proposals aim to preserve The Queen’s Hall’s architectural heritage while adapting it to modern needs, ensuring it remains a cherished venue for years to come.
