| Multiple Houses 18 dwellings at high density for a brownfield site in a run down inner city in England. We proposed to re-intstate the historical street pattern and to make a village of houses by keeping density above 30 houses / hectare. We proposed using small compact houses all with private gardens. The scheme was for mixed income, social and ethnic groups hence we built in flexibility to individual house plans which could be adjusted to suit each cultural situation. By varying the ridge heights, roof pitches and chimneys we proposed an interesting skyline and a feeling of individuality and difference. Using a restrained pallette of materials, local red brick, smooth render and timber cladding prevents a cluttered aesthetic. The corners of each block would be differentiated either by function, with corner shops, or by form. |
