Garden room C

A bad design for an extension to one of Edinburgh's classic 1930's bungalows by another architect led an exasperated client to us.

We were able to establish the principle of stepping down within the house, thus allowing a flat roof extension that does not engage with the existing roof - saving a great deal of cost and ongoing waterproofing problems.

Being level with the outside space also allows an intimate relationship with the garden and a gentle heirarchy between the three kitchen-living-dining spaces

The solution also included a 'green' roof with drought resistant sedum planting for decorative and water retention purposes. This roof would also allowing access for fireworks viewing - this roof having a great view of the festival and New Year fireworks.

The design would also allow for construction prior to holes in the existing fabric being made - thus keeping construction time within the house (when the clients and their young children would need to move out) to an absolute minimum.
