This project started as a simple kitchen re-design but in establishing the brief we discovered a problem with the existing kitchen/diner that led to our design response. An existing gas fire in the adjacent living space required an air vent under the window. In winter this provided uncomfortably cold air right at the feet of diners at the table.
The response for the Japanese client was a traditional Kotatsu table, with ducted fresh air for the gas fire, and kitchen units made up of the same material.
