the overgrown stone barn

Canted House

This house was to replace an existing 18th C stone barn, adding a dwelling to an existing farm. The client was a family with two young children and a Japanese connection.

The plan was canted to take advantage of wonderful views to the South over a loch and of evening light from the West.

The resultant East wing contained 4 bedrooms bedrooms, with loft sleeping space above, and the study/workplace for the parents, who would both work from home.

The corridor connection was designed as a Japanese Engawa with sliding doors between bedrooms, the corrdior and the outside. The outside covered, West facing corrdior is called a Nuri-en. This extends in front of the kitchen / dining rooms to form an outside eating space with balcont above (facing the views).

The West wing contains the public spaces, a large double hight living space and a guest room above. In the centre is the heart of the home, a kitchen dining space and large utility room housing a wood pellet boiler, washing, drying and boot room (for country life).
